Southend Hospital Radio Blog
Thanks to those members who took the time to come along to the 2011 Annual General Meeting (a.k.a. The AGM!) last night.
The AGM is always a good opportunity to get an update on the station’s activities over the years, and as was discussed, it’s generally been a good year, with a number of successful fundraising activities and special events. 2010 was also the Year of The Flood, meaning that the station was off-air for a little while as the studios dried out and equipment was re-connected.
The station’s committee gave an update on the events of the last 12 months, took a quick look at the station’s finances, and looked at what was planned for the coming year, before agreeing to the committee members for the coming year.
For those unable to attend this year’s AGM, a copy of the minutes will soon appear on the studio noticeboard as usual.
For the month of March 2011, shoppers in the Southend-on-Sea area can lend their support to Southend Hospital Radio, through the Waitrose Community Matters programme.
Each month, shoppers at Waitrose are given a green token to put to one of three charities. Donations are made to those charities based on the amount of tokens each charity gets.
In the Leigh-on-Sea branch of Waitrose this month, Southend Hospital Radio has been selected as one of the three charities, and if you want to lend your support, drop your green token in the Southend Hospital Radio box.

Adding support for Southend Hospital Radio at Waitrose, Leigh-on-Sea
We’d like to thank Waitrose for allowing us to be one of this month’s chosen charities, and to all of the shoppers at Waitrose Leigh-on-Sea for showing your support.
Although the initial thought of doing a 13.1 mile walk on a hot summers evening may not seem very appealing, it’s actually a lot of fun. The 2010 Moonlight Colourthon was a really good way for Southend Hospital Radio members to raise money and have fun at the same time. Dave Gold, Joe Smith and I managed to complete the 13.1 mile walk in under four hours and what an eventful evening! Little did I know that Dave would speed off ahead and beat both Joe and I to the finishing line, or how tasty those burgers would look at the bbq in the park afterwards.
The sight of hundreds of bright orange, yellow, red, blue and green t-shirts was definitely an eye opener and lots of people waited outside their houses and along the seafront to cheer us all on. We also got lots of support throughout the walk with kind volunteers at each mile stop cheering us and giving us water to keep us going. It was fun having a good natter with each other as well as meeting other people fundraising.
We still haven’t calculated our final fundraising total but it we know we’ve raised a few hundred pounds and we’ll definitely be participating and doing the Colourthon again next year; hopefully with a few more members joining us.

This Saturday, the 4th of September 2010 sees the annual “Flag Day” in Southend High Street.
This marks the chance for members of Southend Hospital Radio to get out on the streets spreading the word about the service that the radio station provides, as well as collecting funds to help the station to continue to operate.
Our team will be on the High Street between 9am and 4pm, and you’ll find our van outside Lloyds TSB Bank in the middle of the high street.
If you see our team, please come along and say hello. If you’d like to show your support, please drop a few coins in our tin.
